The month of September is slated as Big Brothers Big Sisters Month across Canada.

Humboldt and other BBBS clubs in the country will be highlighting their need for mentors and celebrating those who are already volunteering their time to be a mentor.

"We are hoping to find more mentors but we just want to live up to our pledge to work together and empower youth in Humboldt and all of Canada to reach their full potential," said Jodie Hergott, Development Coordinator with BBBS of Humboldt.

Here in Humboldt, BBBS will be celebrating with "Lighting the Town Purple" on September 18th as City Hall and Civic Park being highlighted with purple lighting. On that same day, BBBS in Humboldt will be making a big announcement on their social media accounts.

Right now in Humboldt, BBBS has 21 youth on their waiting list with a majority of them being male. After doing some heavy research, BBBS found that a youth with a mentor has a 52 percent less chance of skipping school and are 63 percent more likely to get into postsecondary education.

"It really does only require a few hours a week. It probably only takes as much time as one would spend in an evening on the internet," said Hergott.

Big Brother Big Sisters have been here in Humboldt for a total of 39 years and it's proof Humboldt believes in the power of mentoring.
