The Horizon School Division would like to remind parents to make sure their child knows what to do when approached by a stranger.

After an incident where an unkown male and female attempted to lure a child into a car while walking home from school, HSD is speaking to students about safe bahviour around strangers, and advise parents to do the same.

Kevin Garinger is the Director of Education for HSD.

He talks about the importance of safety around strangers for kids.

"It's very important that we do all work together to teach our children when it's appropriate to speak with strangers, and how to stay safe in those types of situations. If a child is approached by a stranger offering them a ride or a treat for example, as was the situation on December 1st, the child should leave the area immediately and tell their parents or caregivers, or certainly a trusted adult."

Garinger says this isn't the first time the School Division has dealt with this problem.

"We've dealt with matters in our small communities, out in the general school system, and it's something that, again, we need to continue to impress upon our parents and work together with parents as they impress upon their children the same message about ensuring our children are safe."

Garinger says although fear is natural in these situations, the main message of keeping children safe is important to share.

"Tyhese are the types of things that do create some level of anxiety. These are our children and we want to protect them, so that message around ensuring children remain safe in those situations is a critical message to continue to share."

Garinger adds that whenever a similar situation arises, the RCMP is notified immediately.
