A suspicious man approached a student at Nokomis School and asked if he wanted a ride, according to a letter to parents from Horizon School Division director of education Kevin Garinger.

The student reported the incident to the school principal November 14. The suspicious person was described as a middle-aged white male with brown and gray hair, glasses, a shaved beard and a deep voice. He was driving a beige Chrysler van with rust around the rims and the license plate number included a 2 and 3.

The principal notified the student’s parent and the incident has been reported to the RCMP.

"The safety of our children is paramount in Horizon School Division and we feel that it is important to notify parents of this suspicious incident. We will take this opportunity to speak with children at the school about safe behavior as it relates to strangers," Garinger said in the letter.

A similar incident is reported to have happened November 9 at Punnichy Elementary Community School, and in another letter to parents Garinger said students in the area will be dismissed directly to their buses for the time being to avoid waiting in the playground and schoolyard after school.
