Saskatchewan's top curling team is splitting up.

Team Laycock announced Wednesday that they will be going separate ways following the conclusion of the 2018 season.

The team's second, St. Gregor's Kirk Muyres, says that plenty of thought went into it, especially given how much success they had.

"We had a good run and won a lot of games. It was a tough thing to consider, but it was one of those things that looking forward at the next four or five years, we all sat down and realized maybe we all needed that spark to keep going, re-energize and get excited about curling for the next four years."

Along with brother Dallan, the Muyres' were able to win four provincial titles over the last five years along with a third-place finish at the 2015 Brier.

Every four years, curling is a hotbed of activity for the break-up of old teams and the formation of new teams, as a new Olympic cycle begins.

Muyres says that it has really added to the buzz and intrigue around curling right now and is helping to continually generate more interest in the sport.

He says that while nothing is set in stone for his new team yet, he is not looking to join a team out of the province.

Leaving Saskatchewan to find success at the Olympics or Brier has been a theme for some players from the province, but Kirk says that he wants to help break the streak and bring a championship back home.

"I certainly want to be that team or part of a team that is able to win the Brier after a 38 year drought, so I definitely want to stay in the province and keep moving the sport forward."

Saskatoon's Rick Folk was the last to capture the national title, winning in 1980.

While his future in men's play is still to be determined, Muyres' immediate future includes a return to the ice March 28.

He'll be competing at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship in Leduc, Alberta - an opportunity that just recently came up.

"Geoff Walker, who plays lead for Team Gushue, his fiancee is my partner. I've played one Mixed Doubles event before in my life and it was with Laura (Crocker) and we had good success going 5-1."

Walker is unable to compete due to playing for Gushue and Canada at the World Men's Championship which starts March 31 in Las Vegas.

As far as a future in the Mixed Doubles format goes, Muyres says that if time permits once his new team is formed, it could be something he explores.
