The Skate Canada Sectionals are taking place this weekend at the EPA.

The three day event will feature over 130 of Saskatchewan's top figure skaters competing in age categories varying from ages 8 to 19 years of age.

Danielle Shaw is the Executive Director and Event Manager for Skate Canada Saskatchewan.

She talks about how Humboldt's location made it an easy choice for hosting this event.

"Our Provincial Championships is one of the competitions that we are able to take to smaller communities, and Humboldt is kind of the centre. They've got a very strong skating club, so we wanted to showcase our skaters and the central location does help with the travel, because the competitors this weekend will be from across Saskatchewan."

Shaw says Humboldt's Elgar Peterson Arena is a great spot for this event.

"We actually used to be in Humboldt annually for a club development seminar. So we're quite familiar with the facility. We like the set up where the rink meeting rooms, everything is under one roof, hotels are close by, and hospitality is great. We're really looking forward to a great event in Humboldt this weekend."

Shaw describes the schedule for the weekend.

"Competition will start our opening ceremonies just before 11 AM with a brief Remembrance Day service. Closing Friday at 10:15. Saturday, practices start at 7 AM, and practice and competition run throughout the day, right up until 11 PM. And on Sunday, practice starts again at 7 AM, with events starting at 9:30, and competition concluding by 4 o'clock."

This isn't the first Skate Canada event Humboldt has hosted.

Back in 2008, a similar, but smaller Skate Canada event took place in Humboldt.
