The first alumni game for the HCI Mohawks was a battle for every yard.

On Friday, September 13, the HCI Mohawks went head to head with the Martensville Royals at Glenn Hall Park. The new season opened during the alumni game with dozens of former players and coaches coming from far and wide to see their old team play.

In the first quarter, the Royals seemed to be running the game completely after scoring two passing touchdowns from their quarterback, Aidan Kliewer. Heading into the second quarter, the Mohawks needed to respond with points after being down 14-0 in the first 12 minutes of play. The Mohawks did manage to find the endzone in the second quarter with a touchdown run from the quarterback, Cody Bergermann. Heading into the second half the Royals had a seven-point lead with a score of 14-7.

To start the third quarter, both offences started out slow by punting the ball back and forth. Then it would be Martensville who would draw first blood in the second half and extend their lead to 14. Humboldt would respond with Dakota Hoffman-Ward leading the offence by scoring their second touchdown of the game. However, the Royals weren't going to go quietly into the night as they scored just before the end of the third, making the score 28-14.

In the fourth quarter, the two teams kept exchanging punts until the Mohawks got down to Martensville's one-yard line with about 5 minutes remaining. With still plenty of time to score and get the ball back to tie the game, the Mohawks fumbled on the goal line where Martensville would recover.

The Royals finished the game by running the clock out in the dying minutes with a speedy running back in Brody Nelson. Martensville defeated the Mohawks with a final score of 28-14. Regardless of the outcome on the field, the night was still a huge success with 47 years of Mohawks football history gathered in one place and one of the largest crowds at a high school football regular-season game.

The Mohawks will host North Battleford at Glenn Hall Park next week on Friday, September 20th.
