Tuesday night was the annual general meeting for Safe Communities Humboldt & Area at Jubilee Hall.

As a registered non-profit organization, Safe Communities Humboldt & Area must have an annual meeting to review what happened in the year prior for the organization and to look into the new year.

One of the topics that Safe Communities looked back on was their application for charitable registration with the Canadian Revenue Agency which was approved. Now that the organization is a registered charity, it will open up opportunities with respect to program funding and membership.

"Now as a registered charity, we can give charitable tax receipts, so hopefully that will increase our membership by allowing individuals to invest and not just businesses," said executive director of Safe Communities Humboldt & Area, Shari Hinz.

Looking ahead, Safe Communities Humboldt & Area is receiving funds from Safe Saskatchewan. The money is designated to go towards a suicide prevention initiative. The initiative has been a priority the organization hasn't been able to secure funding for.

"This allows me and others in the community to take training to allow us to provide safe talk sessions in the community, schools, employers on suicide prevention."

The meeting also touched on the 2018 financial statements and other programs that will be run throughout 2019.
