Wynyard High School student Jessie Froehlich was the recent recipient of several awards for outstanding vocal performance through her Conservatory Canada Grade 8 voice exam. Froelich, who is in grade 12, scored the Provincial Medal of Excellence for achieving the highest exam mark in the province. The award, presented in Saskatoon, came along with the Gerald Fagan Scholarship, which singled her out from vocal students and performers across Canada. The exam required Froehlich to memorize five songs from a variety of categories and be able to present a deep understanding of elements such as technique and structure. The rigorous exam also required her to sight read and sing at the same time.

Froehlich claims to have had a passion for music from a young age when she and her twin brother would sing together. Eventually, she navigated toward classical music and more formal study. Throughout her study from grades three to eight, she has won other medals, though none so prestigious. When asked about her reaction to winning the awards, Froehlich reflects, "I didn't expect to get an award; I just wanted to do the best that I could for the vocal exam and see where it could take me, and it feels like I've accomplished a lot."

Going forward, Froehlich hopes to continue to pursue high achievement in her future performances, and as she puts it, "to see where music can take me." While classically trained, she does sing popular music and accompanies herself on the piano. She credits much of her success to quality music instructors such as Marilyn Lazorko of Wynyard and the support of her parents and her brother.
