With flurries expected to begin overnight Saturday in Humboldt and the area winter driving conditions are expectedly not far behind.

Every year the start of the slippery road season seems to catch Saskatchewan residents by surprise so Saskatchewan Government Insurance is out to remind drivers that snow isn't far away.

"The easiest thing you can do just is slow down," Kelley Brinkworth, Manager of Media Relations with SGI said this week. "Keep in mind the posted speed limits are for ideal conditions so when conditions are less than ideal, let's say it's really slippery or there's blowing snow so visibility is poor, you want to decrease your speed accordingly."

She adds that one of the most important winter driving tips is something that occurs prior to even gripping that bone chilling wheel.

"Another thing to do is make sure you clear the snow or ice from your vehicle. You know you see those people where they have just have a little circle for their eyes to see out, you want to make sure that your windshield and back window is completely free of snow so you have good visibility."

Always important, all year is checking to make sure all your turn signals and headlights work properly, that is an extra focus with so much less daylight over the winter months.

Checking the Highway Hotline on the side of this page is key when venturing out to the Saskatchewan roads.

Flurries will continue until about lunch on Sunday then it does look clear for the first half of the work week.
