On the cusp of hunting season, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation and Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association have issued warnings regarding dry land.

The groups are concerned with sparks from vehicles starting wildfires on farmland used for hunting.

Executive Director Darrell Crabbe says it's important to get the message out now.

"Bow hunting comes into full effect September 1st, so we're partnering up with Stock Growers to make sure everyone takes every precaution they need to so we don't create issue out there."

Crabbe says they are cautioning hunters about vehicles on farm land.

"With these dry conditions and high wind, a spark could create drastic conditions to develop and we don't want to be the cause of those," he noted. "Make sure you're parked in the right spots. We prefer people hunt on foot only. Carrying a fire extinguisher in your vehicle really helps as well."

He says that in addition to being mindful of a potential incident, it is also time to seek permission from land owners.

"You should be out right now checking with land owners to make sure you're allowed to hunt in those areas."
