Freezing overnight, large puddles when it warms and there's still a sizeable amount of snow yet to melt.

The City of Humboldt has been busy over the last several days thawing drains.  Overnight temperatures are low enough to freeze standing water on H

umboldt streets but through the day, the above freezing temperatures and sunshine meanthe ice thaws to form large puddles.  The standing water is a result of drains being blocked by ice formed overnight.

In March, Discover Humboldt spoke with Public Works Director, Peter Bergquist and his assessement then was on the mark for what we see now.

“We anticipate that water breaks are going to be the most difficult thing that we have to deal with, along with the thawing period.”

“We’ll have times where it’s warm days and we have to scramble to open up drains, and then it’ll freeze over again and then it’ll thaw and then freeze. That’s our biggest challenge during the spring, is to make make sure those storm drains keep on draining and don’t freeze back up.”

Walking can be a challenge to manoeuvre around puddles and drivers are being asked to slow down and, hopefully, keep pedestrians from incurring any unwanted dry-cleaning bills.

Temperatures through the week will be simiilar to this past week with highs near 3 or 4 degress through the day and freezing at night.  There is warmer weather on the way; temperatures are expected to see double digits in a week.
