Saskatchewan is celebrating tourism in the province from May 28 to June 3, as Tourism Week is recognized.

In central Saskatchewan, one spot certainly pops up when residents of the province or other visitors are looking for a destination within a shorter distance.

Community Development Coordinator for Watrous and Manitou Beach, Brendan Manz says that the 'game' is always changing when it comes to attracting tourists.

"What we're finding is different trends and that is people coming from shorter distances, and they're not staying as long and not necessarily spending as much money," he explained. "We have to be very cognizant of that. Whether it's a daytripper or someone coming out of Saskatoon, Regina or Alberta who may be coming just for the weekend."

Manz says that they are continually seeking people out by getting out information about the area through media, as well as travel.

"We travel to different trade shows throughout the spring time. We also work closely with Tourism Saskatchewan and bring in folks from travel media and different bloggers from around the world who make a point of stopping here and telling our story."

An example of that recently popped up online.

Narcity, a company based out of Toronto and Montreal, recently wrote about Little Manitou Lake as one of the 'Top 12 Secret Swimming Spots to Visit in Canada', stating that "its water is dense enough that swimmers can easily float on the surface".

Many people will be soaking in the water this summer as like many destinations in the province, they will be holding Canada Day celebrations to recognize the 150th birthday of the nation.

Manz says that in addition to their big plans in early July, they are also bringing in some cultural dances throughout the summer.

"We have many different events going on. Everything from a parade to a slo-pitch tournament and beer gardens," he noted. "We're also working with the Indigenous community of Saskatchewan to bring a lot of performances. Everything from hoop dancers to pow wow dancers and that sort of thing."

Danceland at Manitou Beach recently hosted The Creeland Dancers and Lawrence Roy Jr., a hoop dancer.

On June 9 and 10 they welcome Thunderinghillz Pow Wow Dancers to the historic venue. Tickets are available right now through the Manitou Beach office.

In celebrating Tourism Week, the Watrous Manitou Marketing Group is teaming up with the Watrous Area Arts Council to hold a fundraising barbecue.

That will take place on Wednesday from 11:30am to 1:30pm at Cenotaph Park on Main Street.
