It was a special day in Lake Lenore as the Senior Girls Basketball team held their annual Basketball tournament.

Although Lake Lenore didn't receive the 1st place prize, they certainly won the day, by honouring their late coach Wade Weseen, who passed away last summer.

The lancers renamed their tournament the Wade Weseen invitational tournament, and also renamed their Gym the Wade Weseen Memorial Gymnasium.

Lyle McKellar is the Executive Director of the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA).

He recalls his experiences with Wade.

"My relationship with Wade goes back 25 years. We coached against one another over the years, we shared a few staff room floors over the years on various weekends over the years, and then we ended up serving together as part of the SHSAA executive council and Wade's leadership in the SHSAA had a big influence on me."

McKellar drove all the way from Regina for the presentation.

He says naming the gym after his long time friend and colleague seemed fitting.

"I don't imagine you could count the number of hours that Wade spent in that Gymnasium molding students into citizens. To have it named in his honour is a lasting legacy, that people won't ever forget Wade Weseen and what he did for the community, for the school, and we'll piggy back on that, for the SHSAA as well."

McKellar spoke about how Lake Lenore Lancers from past and present were in attendance, and the community pride that was on display throughout the weekend.

"I think that's one of the things that's unique and special about what Wade and Val built here as Lancer athletics. It's one of the things I took from him 25 years ago when I first met him at this tournament, was the pride that the community had in the school and the programs that he was building."

The name change took place during a special Presentation on the Saturday afternoon.

This years Lake Lenore Lancers team finished in 4th place at the tournament.
