Every Saskatchewan town needs a surface to skate on during the colder months.

In late December the town of Wakaw finished constructing its first-ever outdoor rink right in the middle of Drive Scott Cresent. The Wakaw Town council put in an application to the Wakaw Recreation Board, who in the end supplied the $1,000 to erect the outdoor rink.

"It was a town initiative and volunteers really helped make this rink a reality with the fire department pitching in and it was just to get kids outside," said Micheal Markowski, member of the Wakaw Town Council.

With the rink in the middle of Drive Scott Cresent, it will provide a recreational activity for the daycare that is located on the cresent. Then Wakaw school is just a block away so students can rush over after school. With a large number of kids using the rink each day, it looks like the outdoor rink will make a return next year.

"With this year just being a trial, we do now have some preliminary plans to hopefully build it bigger and better with a permanent structure," said Markowski.

The rink is maintained by volunteers throughout the community during the winter months.
