A local dance group in Wadena is hoping Fishing Lake is peppered with fishing enthusiasts on Saturday.

The first annual Fishing Lake Fish On derby is slated for Saskin Beach starting with registration at 8am.

Co-Chair Carrie Turnbull says a local dad and avid ice fisher came up with the fundraising idea.

"We live in an area close to Fishing Lake, it's a wonderful recreational area and we have not had a derby out there yet. We knew it was something we could pursue and basically, he is a dad and has a lot of kids in different activities and he just saw a huge opportunity there to raise some funds."

The funds raised from the inaugural event will benefit the Wadena Vohon Ukrainian Dance Club.

"Our intentions with that is this year we want to see how successful it is and next year hopefully another community group in the Wadena, Kelvington or Foam Lake area might want to participate by doing the volunteering for it then reap some of the benefits."

A Can-Am Defender ATV, a Polaris Ranger 500 or $10,000 is the grand prize. A Kubota 48" zero turn mower or $3,000. There are over 20 secondary prices from sponsors as far as Saskatoon and Humboldt.

The cost is $60 hole, additional holes are $30. Hole picking starts at 10 o'clock.

Provincial fishing rules still apply including the use of barbless hooks for the day. Holes are pre-drilled so scoops or something to bust through the fresh ice is recommended.
