The Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce plans to research cities with a successful tax abatement policy.

The issue came up during Mayor Rob Muench’s remarks at the Chamber’s annual general meeting on Thursday.

Muench told the group he wasn’t sold on a blanket abatement policy. While some newcomers such as the Canalta hotel have received an incentive tax break, Muench said he also wants to be fair to the city’s longtime businesses.

Chamber executive director Stacey Poss told Bolt FM existing businesses need support.

“I think that should be the foundation and then the mayor had indicated, it’s good to invite new business too, and I’m glad they're taking the time to look at this because I don’t know there’s a blanket solution or blanket policy for anything.”

She also said the province’s 2017 property tax assessments have left some Humboldt businesses in tough shape.

“Talking to some of our members, some of them are still trying to come back from some of the increases. And we’re talking not just $10,000 but some $50,000. That’s a big deal.”

As far as the local economy goes, manufacturers and hotels are doing well, and while the retail sector may be struggling she’s hopeful of a turnaround this year, she said.

She also stresses the importance of marketing and networking.
