Students at Humboldt Public School are going to get to learn more outside in the final few weeks of this year and beyond.

Through a funding grant courtesy TD Bank, they were able to install parts of their outdoor classroom.

"That kind of kick started phase number one," Principal Clayton Parobec explained. "Phase number one is the construction of a butterfly garden in front of our library, the big windows you see when you drive by as well as a number raised flower beds in a series of geometric shapes."

Parobec said the shapes will be great for math classes to learn more about dimensions and volumes with large life sized objects.

A few students were on hand during the construction Saturday but for most the new features will be a shock for most students.

"Anytime that there is action happening at the school their eyes are glued to the windows wondering what's going on," Parobec joked. "Definitely when they come there is going to some students hovering over the garden wondering what the different plants are."

This addition is just a long line of local playground and green space improvements across the city with plenty of volunteerism and corporate funding.

Parobec, who has two young kids at home says it's phenomenal to see whether it's at HPS or any other school or park.

"A couple years ago St. Dominic did some additions to their playground, St. Augustine just had a massive install, we had some new pieces of our playground installed, add on our outdoor classroom, Bill Brecht Park has a new cage, there's so much excitement and buzz in the community."

RBC volunteers also chipped in with labour hours through their "Day of Service" initiative.
