How a highway shuts down during storms in Saskatchewan could be changing.

The Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association voted on a resolution at their convention in Regina to give RCMP the power to close down a highway if deemed necessary.

Currently, highway closures go through the Ministry of Highways, but SUMA is taking a page from Manitoba in lining up the new motion.

The organization says that having the call come from the ministry takes extra time, when police are typically nearest to the scene and have first hand knowledge of whether or not they should shut a road down.

The resolution is being forwarded to the province for a final decision.
