A group of Wadena Composite School students is learning the benefits of giving back to their community and beyond.

The concept behind the Help for Humanity group is to introduce students to volunteer and fundraising opportunities on local, provincial, and international levels. A student-driven volunteer group, the team of up to 25 students select where to volunteer their time and what to fundraise for throughout the school year.

"It makes them aware of opportunities they have to be volunteers. I think if they start at a young age, it carries through their life," says Dawn Lorenzen.

Teachers Lorenzen and Shelly Campbell took ten students to Saskatoon on May 4th to donate their time at Friendship Inn, and also presented a cheque acquired through fundraising.

Lorenzen says the students, ranging in grades from 7 to 12,  enjoyed serving a meal to those in need and also benefitted from a presentation from the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.

"The kids were very excited by the idea that mentorship can happen anywhere, (not just within an organization), so they were coming up with ways to become mentors in their community," says Lorenzen.
