A heavy foot on the gas pedal could soon cost you more out of your wallet.

The Government of Saskatchewan is increasing fines for speeding.

The base fee for speeding will increase by $30, and will also see the fine double per kilometre over the speed limit. Late charges are increasing from $50 to $60 as well.

"We took a look at other jurisdictions and what we have done in the province in the last little while as well. We know that the speed fines haven't increased in the province since 1993," said Drew Wilby of the Ministry of Justice on the changes.

Wilby says that how police enforce speed limits will not be changed.

"They'll continue to do what they're doing in enforcing speeds on our provincial highways. They're doing a very good job in that, as we have seen some of the collision numbers come down over the last year."

"This should help in that regard as well," he added.

The province projects an additional $6.4 million in revenue with the increases.

Environmental handling charges will also be seeing a bump.

Effective April 1, you'll be paying an extra two cents for purchases on all beverage containers.

Tetra cartons will now be five cents, the cost for cans will bump up to seven cents, while plastic bottles will be eight cents, and glass bottles will be nine cents.

An estimated $10.2 million in additional revenue is projected through the change.

The changes were part of a number of modifications to fees and charges in the province.
