City of Humboldt had to bring out the plows a little early this year with this week's snowfall.

The City of Humboldt has received over 20 centimetres of snow over the passed few days, making transportation difficult for Humboldt residents.

Humboldt's Director of Public Works and Utilities Peter Bergquist says the sudden blast of snow was cause for concern.

"We were a bit surprised that the snow actually stuck around. We were anticipating less volume of snow, and we were anticipating it to melt with the warm ground, but as the temperatures started to fall, we realized we had to get the plows out."

Bergquist describes the snow removal equipment the city is ready to use.

"We already have our sand piles ready to spread in case it gets slippery on the streets. We have our grater as well as a contract grater ready to go, as well as other pieces of equipment to take care of things."

Bergquist explains the order in which the snow gets cleared.

"We like to think of about 2 inches of dense snow on the ground. So if it's a light snow it packs down very easily by car tires or by foot traffic, but if it's dense snow, like it got blown in and is sticking around, we definitely have to take care of that."

With snowfall predicted for Saturday night or Sunday, crews may have to return to the streets on Tuesday.
