Hot dogs were roasting over an open fire, horses were pulling along family and friends, and outdoor enthusiasts enjoyed the weather as the Carlton Trail Ski Club celebrated Family Day Monday.

Monday's event was the sixth year that the club has held the afternoon event, bringing together families to celebrate the holiday.

"Some of us from various communities started putting our heads together and thinking what we could do for our community. With my association with the ski club, it made sense to start this," said organizer Brian Grest.

Grest was anticipating another large crowd throughout the afternoon. Past events have seen upwards of 200 people head out to the club's Dixon site.

The club was planning a trial event for new skiers earlier in the day, but had to postpone that portion of the day due to colder temperatures in the morning.

Grest says that they have re-scheduled the try-it-out event for Sunday, February 25 at 1:30pm, adding that as long as you can walk and are okay falling over, you'll have no problem trying out cross country skiing.
