A 10-year-old Humboldt boy's quest to help find a cure for diabetes was a big hit on Monday.
Duke Brochu held his first annual Skate-a-thon at the Elgar Petersen Arena, welcoming all skaters to join him on the ice.
Brochu, who was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, saw his efforts help raise over $4,000, which will be doubled by a family in Montreal for an over $8,000 donation to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
He started out with a goal of $400, which was quickly increased to $1,000. After seeing the support received on Monday, Brochu was hoping to hit the $4,000 plateau.
Along with the skating, local businesses came on board to donate to a raffle table.
Brochu added his thanks to the City of Humboldt for donating ice time, the Humboldt Broncos, St. Dominic School, local businesses, and everyone who helped support his efforts.
