The Humboldt Wildlife Foundation (HWF) is hoping to raise enough funds to initiate an archery program in the Catholic school system.

One method of raising the $5500 needed to implement the program is through their Turkey Shoot Pie Plate Slices sale.

Member Roger Chapman and Treasurer of the HWF, Murray Freistadt, came to the Humboldt Mall on Saturday to sell the pie slices. The paper "pie" targets will be used at next weekend's Turkey Shoot and Horn Measuring event, taking place at Humboldt Motors. Entrants are asked to write their name and phone number on their selected "pie slice, and if their slice is hit next weekend, they will walk away with a turkey.

Freistadt says the Humboldt branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is composed of over 500 members and has been in existence for 70 years.

"It's a conservation-based organization. It's the largest body of sportsmen in Saskatchewan. They promote conservation methods, hunting, fishing, and being outdoors."

The federation has achieved success in introducing an archery program into the public school system and hopes to raise enough funds to start the program in the Catholic system.

"We put one into the public schools in March and we got the ok to put one into the Catholic school system this year. We don't quite have half the funds raised, so we need another $2500 for sure to get that program up and running."

Freistadt believes the Turkey Shoot next weekend will help raise those funds as well as through upcoming fundraisers such as an awards night and fish fry in March.
