There is some improving news regarding safety on Saskatchewan's roads.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance says early police data shows that fatalities on roads in the province continues to decrease.

There were 102 deaths last year, which was low enough to set a new mark that hasn't been obtained since the 1950's, according to SGI.

"It's terrible that the families of 102 people had to deal with a tragic loss last year. The fact that we saw 23 fewer deaths than the year before is an encouraging sign," stated Minister responsible for SGI, Joe Hargrave.

The yearly average for the past 10 years is 145 deaths, according to SGI, who adds that impaired driving, distracted driving, speed, and a lack of seatbelt restraint are the top contributing factors in vehicle deaths.

"Each of us can contribute to making our roads safer by planning ahead and taking simple actions behind the wheel," Hargrave said.

A special committee was formed in 2012 following an abnormally high number of vehicle deaths.

Since then, the province has continued to add stronger penalties in regards to impaired and distracted driving.
