With the holiday season on the way, SGI and police across Saskatchewan will be keeping an extra eye on impaired drivers throughout December.

Every month, the crown insurer puts out a monthly spotlight that, along with everything else, police keep extra attention to detail.

In December, impaired driving is the where the light shines.

"Police right across the province are going to be watching for drivers that are impaired by either alcohol or drugs. Law enforcement will be out there doing the enforcement part and then SGI's role is just to try and raise awareness," explained Kelley Brinkworth, Manager of Media Relations for SGI.

Brinkworth added that on average there is 1,300 collisions each year that involve impaired drivers. From those collisions, an average of 58 people die, and 656 more are injured.

Consequences for impaired driving include fines, license suspension, and vehicle seizures.

There is a zero drug and alcohol tolerance for drivers under 19 years of age and for all drivers in the Graduated Driver Licensing.

Drivers are also reminded about the report impaired drivers program where by calling 911 you can report any impaired drivers you see while on the road.
