Saskatchewan Government Insurance will be changing auto insurance rates for light vehicles after having their request approved by the Government of Saskatchewan.

The changes will take effect May 21st and will be made to match insurance rates with updates that were made to the Canadian Loss Experience Automobile Rating(CLEAR) table.

The CLEAR table is used by auto insurers across Canada. It rates each type of vehicle based on expected number of claims and cost per claim, as well as the probability the vehicle will be stolen.

Jeff Stepen; Chief Financial Officer for SGI says this isn't a huge revenue builder for the Crown Corporation.

"The small increases that some people will see will be offset by decreases by others, in fact there is more people getting decreases than there are increases. The changes really are very minor, when you add it up for the auto fund as a whole it's revenue neutral."

He adds that the CLEAR table is a structured, concise process to calculate rates.

"In real simple terms when we calculate our rates we use an industry table that tells us for every make, model and year of a vehicle the likelihood of it being in a claim and the cost to repair that claim. What we're doing is we're updating that table from the one we used back in 2014 to the current table."
