Normand Lavoie, a Winnipeg man who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death in the May 2015 crash that killed three teenage boys was back in court Tuesday.

Sentencing arguments took place, with the crown arguing that Lavoie drove recklessly in a well-signed construction zone.

The crown is asking for a jail term of six years, and then a nine-year ban from driving once he is released from prison.

The defence is seeking a term of two years and one day on a federal sentence, which would allow Lavoie to be closer to his family in Manitoba.

On May 3, 2015, the boys were stopped in a construction zone near Spalding on Highway 6, when Lavoie's semi slammed into the back of their car, killing them.

The force of the collision propelled the vehicle into a nearby flagperson, who was injured at the scene.

Sentencing will take place on September 11.
