SaskPower is applying for a rate increase starting July.

The increase would see a 5 percent rate increase in July, and another 5 percent rate increase in January for an average of a $6 increase for the average household.

The Saskatchewan NDP believe the increase comes from the cost of the carbon capture project and failed smart meters.

Crown Investments Critic Carla Beck adds the carbon capture project comes with a hefty price tag; $1.5 billion plus several costly setbacks.

The increase will be reviewed by the Province's rate review panel and the final decision will be left for the Provincial cabinet.
