You will have one more month to recycle any old fridges or freezers that may still be lying around.

Over the last six years, SaskPower has been collecting old fridges and freezers across the province. However, the program is now coming to an end.

Director of Customer Programs at SaskPower, Janson Anderson, said the program has reached its lifespan - much like the appliances collected.

"We basically got to a point where our research is indicating that we've been fairly successful in collecting some of the biggest power-guzzling fridges and freezers that are out there to this point," he said.

While there are still some fridges out there, Anderson says that their intake has slowed down.

"It's time to start looking at some different technologies and different products in the home that can lead to new and different ways that customers can save."

The program has allowed those who have replaced a model from the 1980's, with a newer and more energy-efficient model, to save on average, $180 per year.

Replacing a fridge from the 1990's saves around $130 annually.

Models from the 80's have led the way in the recycling program, with 30% collected, while 70's models were just behind at 29% collected.

With over 30,000 fridges collected, that translates to 4.6 megawatts of power saved - enough to provide electricity to 4,700 homes across the province.

"This particular program has definitely had a positive impact in a number of different ways," Anderson said.

If you are looking to take advantage of the last month of pick-up, Anderson says they will do all the work for you.

"We will come and pick up eligible fridges and freezers when customers call in and then we will arrange for the fridges and freezers to be fully and environmentally responsibly recycled."
