A Saskatchewan Hiker is looking to put Saskatchewan hiking in the national spotlight.

Jay Brown, operator of the website SaskHiker, is in the running for Woods Canada's Greatest Explorer.

Brown describes what it will take for anyone to do well in the competition.

"It's going to be everything from building shelters, navigation skills, using a compass and map properly, starting fires when you don't have matches."

The website helps fellow hikers find good hiking spots all around Saskatchewan.

He says SaskHiker has been quite successful.

"It's been tons of fun, I've gotten some pretty strong community response because there's more than just me out there looking for these things."

Brown adds finding the right hiking spot in Saskatchewan can be difficult at times, which is why he began the site.

"I started saskhiker.com about a year and a half ago now and it was all kind of a spur of the moment type thing where I started hiking a bit more in the province and I realized that the information out there isn't maybe as good as we would hope it would be. There's tons of trails in the province but maybe they're not well marked or you need to kind of know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy to kind of find them."

Brown is hoping to finish in the top 12 in votes for Woods Canada's Greatest Explorer in order to showcase his outdoor skills across Canada. Voting ends May 11th, and you can help his cause and vote by going to his website.
