The SaskAlert has expanded its emergency warning system to smart phones.

A new App has just been released.

Duane McKay is Saskatchewan's Commissioner of Emergency Management and Fire Safety.

McKay says the app will work on about 97 percent of smart phones.

"In which you can download and have all of those alerts come directly to your phone. In addition to that we have launched a new website that has all of that same information on the website as well as amny links into emergency management programs."

McKay says the app will work on Iphones and Android systems. Blackberries will become available after they change to the Anderoid operating system.

McKay of the province's emergency management service says there are two levels of alert.

"A critical alert might be something like a tornado or a boil water advisory. An advisory alert might be a road closure, it might be some service that might be available in a municipality but is no longer due to some incident."

McKay says alerts of imminent dangers will still be sent to radio stations, in addition to the smart phone app.
