While fall is just getting underway, Safe Communities Humboldt and Area as well as the Regional Newcomers Centre are preparing for winter.

Their annual winter clothing and tool drive is underway.

Executive Director of Safe Communities, Shari Hinz, says that they are seeking donations of jackets, gloves, toques and other winter items.

"If there is families that have clean items in good condition that they are willing to donate, they can certainly bring them down to the Newcomers Centre."

With the often snow-packed setting, additional supplies to clean driveways to clear ice are needed as well.

"Snow shovels, booster cables, window scrapers, anything like that, anything that individuals that are new to Canada and Saskatchewan may require."

Hinz added that in the past, support has been fantastic, with classrooms getting on board to provide larger donations.

"We had some schools participate in that manner last year and provide donations that they collected in their own school," she explained. "It's a great opportunity for teachers to implement that into their day and install that aspect of giving with their students."

With Humboldt's population continually growing or altering with new families, Hinz says that the newcomer clinics are vital.

"In past clinics there have been individuals who have not seen snow, prior to coming to our country," she said. "This is an important opportunity for them to do the clothing drive to provide those necessary items."

Donations of clothing or other supplies can be dropped off at the Newcomers Centre, 636 9th Street, until October 12.
