The Terry Fox Run has become a staple for raising funds for cancer research.

Be it in larger centres or rural communities like Humboldt, participants across Canada band together to support the run each year.

In Humboldt, Midland Glass will be the launch point for this year's run, which is slated for Sunday morning at 11.

"Participants can take part in a 2.5, 5 or 10 kilometre route," said Organizer Teri Tarrant. "After the run is complete, Midland Glass is sponsoring a free hot dog and drink for those taking place in the run."

The barbecue will be open to those not competing in the run as well, at a cost of just two dollars.

Another barbecue is taking place on Thursday at Scotiabank. Lunch will be served from 11:30am to 1:30pm with all proceeds then being matched by the bank and contributed towards this year's total.

Tarrant's involvement in the Humboldt event goes back many years.

"I started in the Terry Fox Run when I was in high school," she said. "Everyone knows the Terry Fox story and knows how important it is to raise money for cancer research."

In 2007, the HCI Mohawks girls soccer team took over organizing the run, which is where Tarrant began her participation. Now, she is coach of the team and taking a lead role in helping raise money for the foundation.

She added that there are multiple ways to help out, even if you aren't able to take part.

"If you can't make it to the run, you can always log on to the website and donate there as well."

Other runs in the area on Sunday are being held in Jansen and Watrous.
