The Wadena Recreation Centre requires roof repairs but is otherwise in good shape and should be usable for the next decade, according to an engineering study.

A January 22 report from Brownlee Beaton Kreke in Regina found some water staining at the underside of the arena roof, and said staff commented that roof leaks that do happen are most likely the result of the poor condition of the roofing material.

“Currently the water damage did not appear to have caused significant amount of wood rot; however with continuous water infiltration, rot and deterioration of the wood structure could occur. We would recommend that the roofing system be addressed in order to prevent future roof leaks. Options could include roofing repair of isolated areas, or complete replacement of the shingles and roofing system,” the report said.

The parks and recreation committee will examine what can be patched and what can be replaced, or whether the whole roof needs to be replaced, Wadena CAO Ferne Hebig said.

“Basically what the report says is if we proceed as planned we’ll get at least another 10 years out of it, and then to look back in another 10 years and see how it’s going.”

The arena is part of a new infrastructure assessment plan the city is working on for its facilities.

“We’ve always had a capital asset management plan but it hasn’t really been revised or looked at or reviewed and it’s been some time since they’ve done anything. So we’re looking at now getting an up-to-date plan in place so we can plan for the future,” Hebig said.

The engineering report also recommends reviewing the arena’s exterior drainage and regrading it if needed, and completing arch base reinforcement within five years.
