This past Winter, a group of Humboldt citizens met together and discussed the possibilities of the city being the safe haven for a refugee family.

From there on the Humboldt and Area Refugee Coalition was formed, now somewhere inside four months a family will arrive.

"We have selected a family," explained Coalition member Chelsea Nadiger. "It's a young couple and they have two little boys, ages two and four. We just signed the paper work, it's called an undertaking so now anywhere between one and four months they could arrive."

The details on the family are very vague, Nadiger said she isn't even sure where they are coming from. That is simply not that important a beaming Nadiger continued.

"It's so exciting, it's really exciting that we can be part of something that's Canada wide, even international. It's really cool that Humboldt can put their mark on the globe that way."

The Coalition is working to set up housing for the family, they are still taking donations of household items, for more information or to assist, call the Newcomer Centre at 682-4277. They will also be set up at the city wide garage sale on May 14th.

Now that it's a reality, Nadiger says they have some loose ends to tie up.

"We are working on any supports they might need in the community once they arrive here. We are going to be touching base with maybe mental health services if they need that for maybe some Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or even other organizations in town that can support them."

"It's special, I think it's really special and so far the response has been amazing, so thanks Humboldt," she concluded as the wait now begins.
