There was a record number of vehicle seizures last year due to distracted driving. Therefore SGI is increasing the number of Traffic Saftey Spotlights with the same focus starting with March.

SGI's Traffic Safety Spotlight for the month of March is distracted driving.

87 people had their vehicle's seized and impounded throughout 2018 due to cellphone tickets in Saskatchewan, which is the most ever since the law came into effect in 2010.

It seems as if those trends haven't slowed down at all. In January alone, police in Saskatchewan reported 640 distracted driving offences, 545 of those tickets involved cellphones.

"As you can see from the number of distracted driving tickets issued in January, police continue to report high numbers of distracted drivers each and every month, particularly when it comes to cellphones. So we are going to be increasing the amount of Traffic Safety Spotlights in relation to distracted driving. We're going to have three in 2019, this one in March, then again in June, and finally October. It's always a good reminder for people to keep their phones down and their heads up," said Manager of Media Relations with SGI, Tyler McMurchy.

Under The Traffic Safety Act, receiving a second $280 cellphone ticket within a year triggers an immediate roadside vehicle impoundment, which is held at an impound for seven days. It also results in four demerits under SGI’s Safe Driver Recognition program.
