A local woman is helping turn a fun night out into an opportunity to give back.

Cailin Hergott is behind Bad Moms Night Out - a local initiative to allow women to interact and have a night out while also raising funds.

"I started doing these mom's night out just over a year ago. They seemed to be fairly popular and we realized there was an opportunity to turn it into a fundraiser," she explained.

Hergott is an advocate for type 1 diabetes in the area and so naturally that was the fundraising path that she elected to go with.

Women were invited to Reel Attractions to enjoy a movie, as well as food and drinks.

Hergott was wowed by the response and the amount they were able to raise.

"Our total was $2,235," she said. "The really exciting thing is there is a family in Montreal who is doubling everything donated to JDRF between now and December 31, so it will be almost $4,500 that is donated."

Local businesses came on board to donate items to a raffle as part of the fundraiser.

Hergott says that there is still plenty more to come in helping to not only raise funds but also awareness about diabetes.

"I want to thank everybody who came out and also remind people that there is still type 1 stuff happening this month. It is Diabetes Month with Diabetes Day on Tuesday (November 14)."

Duke's first Skate-a-thon is taking place on Monday, November 13, from 12:45 to 3:45pm at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

"The kids don't have school that day so it would be great if they could come out."
