Rail Safety Week is an annual week held to raise awareness around rail safety.

This year the week is April 25th until May 1st.

Constable Michael Reid explained what the week was all about.

"The focus is asking the public to help out and get involved, and help us fight dangerous or illegal activities on or near railway tracks, specifically trespassing or disobeying railway signals."\

Constable Reid mentioned where it is legal to cross.

"What all a lot of people don't know is that its actually illegal under the railway safety act to be on railway property. The only safe and legal place where someone is allowed to cross the tracks is at a designated level crossing, which is where the red and white ex's or the cross buck symbol."

If there is ever a problem or emergency situation on or near the tracks Constable Reid tells us what we should do.

"Contact the CN police or whichever railway police service jurisdiction is at that crossing, and this can be found actually on a yellow sticker on every railway crossing in North America."

Constable Reid also mentions to always remain patient when waiting for a train.

"Last year in Canada we had 53 trespassing accidents that resulted in 31 fatalities and 18 serious injuries, and we had 164 crossing accidents in Canada that resulted in 14 fatalities and 18 serious injuries."

Rail Safety Week does wrap up tomorrow but Constable Reid would encourage everyone to go to this website and learn more.
