Humboldt City Council will hold a public hearing on a proposed cannabis zoning amendment bylaw at its August 27 meeting.

Council gave the first reading of the bylaw on Monday.

The bylaw requires any cannabis retail stores to be at least 150 metres away from a school and any other cannabis store, and must be within a commercially zoned area.

Those are fairly standard restrictions being adopted by municipalities, city manager Joe Day said.

A discretionary use designation would allow council to require additional development standards or refuse an application.

Recreational cannabis is set to become legal October 17.
