Representatives from the Ministry of Highways and Transportation met with local leaders recently and outlined their plans for Highway 5 passing lanes.

The work was announced during the budget that was released March 22nd but until now plans weren't officially laid out, now they are.

Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench was present at the meeting, "the whole project is going to be broken down into a number of steps, stages if you will that are going to take place over the next number of years," he explained. "What made the budget this year is a section between Humboldt and the Highway 2 junction. There's going to be two sets of passing lanes there."

Two will be offset just west of the Carmel turn(as pictured), another westbound lane will be constructed just past the Bruno access road, an eastbound lane will lie on the curve slightly east Peterson.

Muench posed the question to the Ministry as to why that section first where the highway is clearly in better shape.

"The section between Humboldt and Highway 2 is in fairly good shape right now, it's width is considered what they call standard at this point in time. The second section of highway between 2 and the early part of Saskatoon is in really bad shape."

The Government of Saskatchewan admits widening along most of it needs to occur as well.

"The first part will be going to tender within this month and construction is to take place over the summer to be done by fall. The second section, as you are all aware is the section that needs more attention is in the engineering process," Muench explained.

He added that in the future years of the project the work still needs to be approved in the annual provincial budget.

The Ministry estimated between 2,00-4,000 cars travel the stretch everyday. 11 people have died along the road since 2011 according to the Ministry's report.
