The cold, dark days of winter are exiting, and as spring slowly makes its way in, many may be looking to get their nutrition on track.

March is declared as Nutrition Month in Canada, promoting healthy-eating and balanced diets, with a theme dubbed 'Unlock the Potential of Food'.

"The theme is intended to support Canadians about the potential of food and how they might benefit from it, prepare it, and share it," says Melanie Warken with the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

Warken says that there is an above average rate of overweight and obese Canadians, with multiple factors playing a role in that.

"People make the food choices they make for a variety of reasons and sometimes cost is that reason or health is that reason, taste, or sometimes convenience."

Often times more expensive items are typically pre-packaged and pre-prepared and don't contain all the nutrients that a freshly made meal of the same items would bring.

Warken says that you should also plan for an entire day, and that doesn't include just meals.

"Looking at snacks is a really important part of contributing to a healthy diet. Planning for healthy snacks is an important part of contributing to that healthy diet."

She added that many struggle to completely change their diet, so simply adding healthy snacks or eating more fresh produce and whole grains would go a long way.
