In the retail business for 30 years, Lorne Pratchler thinks he can help Humboldt's business development, among other items.

Pratchler says he decided to throw his name in for council after some discussions.

"I was approached by two people who I greatly respect, to run for City Council, and thought, it probably is the right time in my life to do it," he explained. "My hope is that we can form a very talented team to discuss issues, and from that, bring solutions that will best serve our city."

In the time that Pratchler knew he was going to be running for council, he says that a few issues have been brought to his attention.

"From concerns people are bringing to me already, it seems to be infrastructure. I've heard comments about the city's sewer and more specifically, the city's lagoon," he noted. "Others have approached me about condition of certain streets and even safety in areas of high traffic."

"If our most fundamental assets are weak, we will be limited as to how far we can go. Infrastructure has to be a priority."

Pratchler, who is currently works as a General Manager, has some insight into want businesses want to hear when investing.

"I've yet to hear a business owner say 'I wish the city or government would give me something'. That's not typically how businesses think," he said. "Businesses want to look after their customers and have the different levels of government there to support them. We have a great resource already with the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce and we need to be open about what the message is that they're going to be bringing."

Pratchler hopes his first crack at running for council is successful. Overall, he is one of five who are running for the first time, while the remaining six candidates have either served, or ran in prior elections.
