Ensuring safety in the home is a focus from October 8 to 14, as Fire Prevention Week is recognized.

The week is an annual event held to promote awareness regarding proper fire safety, according to Humboldt Fire Chief Mike Kwasnica.

"It is a North American celebrated event for fire prevention, so every department in Saskatchewan, Canada, and the US celebrate at the same time."

Kwasnica added that the theme for this year is 'Every Second Counts, Plan Two Ways Out'.

"In your home we want you to go around the room and check that you have two ways out - especially the sleeping area," he explained regarding the theme. "Ensure that the door is accessible, as well as the window in your bedroom is openable and free from obstructions."

Each year during the week, the Humboldt Fire Department hosts an open house, allowing residents to check out the fire hall, as well as see them in action.

"In the past, we have done a grease fire demonstration, auto extrication, we let the kids spray some water," said Kwasnica. "We also have a barbecue with money raised staying with the fire department to purchase equipment."

He added that kids who come to the open house will get a free hot dog.

The open house runs from 5:30 to 8:00pm on Tuesday.
