The City of Humboldt is continuing to work towards the finalization of the 2016 municipal budget.

Thursday night in council chambers they held a public meeting with four key topics on the agenda.

Manager Roy Hardy expands more on the reasoning for the session.

"Those projects are basically looking at how we're going to grow and there's some basic information on what and how we think we're going to grow, what are rate of growth is going to be, how ready we are for growth. Basically setting the time table for what that looks like these days."

Larger projects down the road such as the redevelopment of Centennial Park an an addition to the Uniplex are years away but something more imminent was spoken about, that being the conversion of the current garbage system to a newer, more convenient system as Roy Hardy explains.

"In place of the garbage bag tag system that's in place now basically there would be a charge on a resident's utility bill that would be reflective of the cost of basically being able to have a weekly pick-up."

Hardy says discussions still need to take place with REACT, the disposal company they partner with but he admits the change is a long time coming.

The City of Humboldt staff and council is in a conundrum right now however with a civic election scheduled for October.

Hardy says that's why it's extremely important for the public to weigh in with their opinions.

"Going out to the public and making sure that people have information that helps them to make good decisions and have them to be able to talk to their Councillors and to candidates in the upcoming election. What we're really trying to do is get the information out there so there can be a good community discussion about what our priorities should be."

Each of the four documents presented during the session are quite lengthy, but you can view them on the city's website.
