The seatbelt law has been in place for 40 years in the province, but Saskatchewan Government Insurance is dumbfounded as to why some choose to not buckle up.

"As hard as it is to believe, there are still people who do not wear their seatbelt," says SGI Media Relations Manager Tyler McMurchy.

February's traffic spotlight is on seatbelts and car seats, and McMurchy says that of vehicle fatalities in 2016, a quarter of people who died were not properly restrained.

"How is this still a thing? It's the simplest thing you can do and the number one thing you can do to protect yourself while you are behind the wheel of a vehicle," he added.

Drivers are responsible for ensuring that all passengers under the age of 16 are wearing a seatbelt. Tickets can be handed out for each individual youth who is not buckled up.

With the spotlight also surrounding car seats, McMurchy says they are reminding parents about the law.

"Car seats are mandatory for children under 40 pounds. Booster seats are mandatory for children under seven years of age and under 80 pounds, or under 4'7"."

The fine for improper seatbelt use is $175 and three safety rating points.
