The Peewee A Humboldt Broncos hockey club may not have won a league championship or the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup this past season but they are winners more than ever.

The team's participation in the national contest this past winter was started by their coach Maury Simoneau. The kids then took the ball, or this case, the puck and ran with it. A bottle drive and a one minute video led them to be the Saskatchewan representative in the contest. It was essentially decided by an online vote that they didn't win but in the end they earned $7,000 to distribute to a pair of local charities. On Thursday they presented Humboldt and District Community Services and the Humboldt Food Bank with $3,500 donations.

HDCS Program Coordinator Jordan Korte praised the kids for their efforts.

"To have a program where we can support kids with disabilities is something very special and to provide respite to families as well so they can have that routine and have fun during the summer. I'm super thankful for this team and their incredible gracious donation to this cause."

Food Bank Director Kevin Reiter echoed the notion of thankfulness and gratitude to the group of 12 year olds.

"To get a donation from a peewee hockey team like this is just unbelievable. To hear them speak and be so thankful for what the money is being used for, that was truly amazing."

It went to their new walk-in freezer.

The team visited the HDCS office and the food bank to learn more about both which was a perfect way to wrap up the contest according to player Jackson Beggs.

"It's not just about on the ice, it's about what makes you a good person and it's going to help you grow up to be a better man or woman."

"It was awesome," Beggs added.

You can hear more from Beggs below as well as both Korte and Reiter as they spoke to Bolt FM's Clark Stork.
