they People of Humboldt and surrounding area may not have to pay a pretty penny to hand in compost.

The request came from the City of Humboldt at a city council meeting in October.

Regional Authority of Carlton Trail (REACT) charges $5 a truckload or 50 cents per bag. The reason REACT charges for compost is to keep the landfill south of Humboldt in good condition. The reason the council wants no charge is that it will divert compostable items from the landfill. The benefits of smart composting are fertilized soil, Reduced methane emissions from landfills, and lowers the carbon footprint.

"There has been an increase in the amount of people dumping compostables alongside the roads. People don't want to pay $5 so they'll take a load of branches or a load of grass and dump it where it shouldn't be," said Rob Muench, Humboldt's Mayor.

If costs to hand in compostables at REACT are eliminated, it will hopefully lower the number of people throwing compost in the ditch, sloughs, and fields.
