A newcomer family from Syria are celebrating one year living in the Humboldt area.

A celebration potluck supper was held at the Westminster United Church in Humboldt on Sunday.

Humboldt and Area Refugee Coalition volunteer, Sheena Walls-Ingram, says the supper was a way to reflect on the many accomplishments the El Halaf El Degerli family have achieved as newcomers.

The family has been learning English, learning to drive and drive in the snow, and the children have taken to their school and have made friends, says Walls-Ingram.

Walls-Ingram was joined by a group of coalition volunteers who have shown interest in helping and supporting the refugee family.

The family had fled their home in rural Syria, just outside of Aleppo; which does not exist anymore because of the war.

Walls-Ingram says the El Halaf El Degerli family are comfortable with the rural setting the Humboldt area provides, as they came from a rural part of Syria.

"They feel at home here and they're doing their best to adjust to the Canadian way of life and they're taking advantage of the opportunities Canada has to offer," says Walls-Ingram.
