There could be some new regulations on community service in the coming months.

The Humboldt city council listened to a presentation from a delegation at the council meeting on Monday, September 24th about an alternate punishment for public offenders.

The idea was a different way of handling community service with a supervisor present and the punishment would be related to the crime. For example, if someone is to paint on the side of a public building, they would be responsible to clean up the mess.

Rob Muench, Humboldt's Mayor, said the council had a concern that if the criminal can't make it to Humboldt, their community service will take place elsewhere.

"If they were able to get here to commit the crime, they should be able to get here to do the community service in Humboldt as opposed to where they're from."

The idea of the program is to take stress off the justice system whether it be in prison or in the courtroom.
